Comparing the salaries of Biden and Trump employees in the White House

Earlier this month, the White House released its annual report to Congress revealing the salaries of White House staff.

The Biden administration report revealed the salaries of more than 470 people, whose combined salaries total $46,759,727. Overall, the Biden White House employs more than 600 aides. About half of current White House employees earn $100,000 or more, with the other half earning $90,000 or less.

There are 16 Biden White House employees who earn $0 a year, including senior policy advisers for immigration, economic policy, public health, and democracy and voting rights, among others. Some White House positions do not earn a salary because they are considered “details” who work for other agencies, who pay them, and are assigned to work with the White House. Five people in Trump’s White House earned $0 a year, including Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner, who both served as top advisers to the former president.

Salaries can vary from administration to administration depending on a variety of factors, including the number of positions available, inflation, and the president’s priorities.

Since the administration of George W. Bush, the presidential salary has been $400,000 a year. Former president donald trump donated his salary to various federal agencies.

Vice President Kamala Harris earns $235,100 a year, the federally mandated salary for her position. Former Vice President Mike Pence received a 1.9% raise during his tenure, bringing the vice president’s salary to $230,700.

According to the report, Biden’s 27 highest-paid White House employees all earn more than $180,000. The top 10 highest-paid civil servants start with Francis Collins, the president’s acting science adviser, who earns $300,000 a year. By comparison, Trump’s highest-paid employee was John Czwartacki, the chief of staff’s senior adviser for strategy and stakeholder engagement, who earned $239,595 a year.

Biden’s second-highest-paid White House staffer is Luisa Paiewonsky, who earns $191,300 as a senior transportation policy adviser. Paiewonsky is followed by Stephanie Sykes, director of intergovernmental affairs for the $183,100 infrastructure implementation.

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who took over from Jen Psaki in May, earns $180,000 a year. However, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Trump’s former White House press secretary, was earning $183,000 a year.

Biden’s chief of staff, Ron Klain, earns $180,000 a year, while Mick Mulvaney, Trump’s former chief of staff, earns $203,500.

Robert Blair, a Trump White House aide and senior adviser to the chief of staff’s salary has been set at $183,000, but Jennifer O’Malley Dillon and Bruce Reed who serve Biden’s White House as aides to the president and deputy chiefs of staff earn $180,000.

Jake Sullivan, Biden’s aide to the president for national security affairs, earns $180,000 a year, while Trump’s aide for security affairs John Bolton earned $183,000.

A number of Biden’s White House pay differences are the result of the president’s efforts to narrow the 1% gender pay gap in the White House last July.

Some White House employees go to work for an administration knowing that their experience in the White House will increase their prospects for higher pay in the private sector.
