Energy recruitment firm appoints new chief executive

Energy recruiting firm Strategic Resources has promoted Gary Gray to managing director.

A former director of recruitment and operations for the Aberdeen-based company, he took on the key role in driving business growth in the North East and beyond.

This appointment follows Shonah Raffan’s decision to retire after more than three decades with the company, including the last 27 years as Chief Executive Officer.

Strategic Resources’ major shareholder, CorpAcq, paid tribute to Shonah, citing his “fantastic work over many years” in establishing the company as a primary provider of personnel, contractor management, executive search and outsourced payroll services for the oil and gas industry.

With nearly 20 years of recruitment experience, Gary joined Strategic Resources in 2005, before being promoted to Director in 2014.

He said: “I am delighted to have been appointed to this new role where I can continue to play a vital role in the success of the business and I look forward to continuing the excellent work that Shonah has done over the of the last three decades.

“The business is well placed to build on these foundations and, working with our formidable team, we will drive growth, strengthen existing relationships with customers and contractors and scale the business as necessary to drive taken advantage of new opportunities.”

Strategic Resources recorded a turnover of £19m in 2021. It currently employs 10 people and is looking to create a new role focused on its contractor management services to meet demand.

Gray added: “We are seeing the local recruitment market to be vibrant and extremely competitive for certain skills – the number of contractors has steadily increased as the impact of the pandemic has subsided, and clients have also become more focused on staff opportunities.

“We expect these themes to persist through 2022, coupled with opportunities to grow our own businesses in the renewable energy and digital sectors in light of the transition to net zero and the adoption of new work methods.”

Raffan said: “I am very proud of the Strategic Resources team and what they have achieved over the past 34 years.

“Gary has an excellent team behind him, and I am confident that under his leadership they will continue to provide personal and professional service to candidates, contractors and clients, and that strategic resources will continue to thrive. »
